NewsCO.com.au – Records tumble in Champions League

December 7, 2017

A record five Premier League teams have made it into the knock-out stages of the Champions League while ambitious Paris Saint-Germain smashed the group stage scoring record and Real Madrid’s Cristiano Ronaldo also added another milestone.

Ronaldo became the first player to score in every group match on Wednesday night as the holders beat ex-champions Borussia Dortmund 3-2. Ronaldo led the way with nine group goals for an unrivalled 114 overall. But the record 12-time winners Real only finished second in their group behind Tottenham Hotspur who join Manchester City, Manchester United and Liverpool as group winners from England in the last 16 while Chelsea also advanced by coming second.

It was a big statement of intent ahead of Monday’s last 16 draw from the Premier League which has struggled in recent years and has not lifted the trophy since Chelsea’s success in 2012.The English sides won 21 of their 30 games, with a stunning goal difference of 80-26 but Chelsea boss Antonio Conte warned this doesn’t mean an English side will also lift the trophy in May.
