October 13, 2017

A former Bronx middle school teacher has been charged with rape after an underage student reported their relationship to police, sources said.

The unidentified student, now 17, alleges that she and her former teacher, Michael Reyes, first began having sex when she was a 15-year-old student at Equality Charter School located on Hutchinson River Parkway near Einstein Loop South in Co-Op City.

Reyes, 32, was nabbed early Friday morning at his Pelham Bay home after the young woman reported him to a nearby police precinct on Thursday evening, sources said. He was charged with rape and endangering the welfare of a minor.

Their relationship allegedly started in January 2016 and continued until August of this year, even after the student graduated from the middle school.

The victim was never assaulted at the charter school, sources said. Each time, the pair would meet at Reyes’ home.

The charter school is attended by 6th through 8th graders and is separate from Equality Charter High School in Castle Hill.

Reyes has not worked at the middle school since the end of the 2015-2016 school year, said Equality Charter School Principal Amanda Huza, who was unaware of the incident prior to the Post’s reporting. Huza would not disclose the nature of Reyes’ departure and would not comment further on the matter.
