Washington. Victorian premier Daniel Andrews is counting on deals with big defence companies to add thousands of jobs to the state, as the federal government prepares a slew of contracts for local work.
The Premier has used a trade mission to Washington to pitch the idea to chief executives at global defence companies including Lockheed Martin.
“There’s $1 billion being spent on Australian companies and 65 per cent of that supply chain is located in Melbourne, so they’re a key partner,” Mr Andrews told The Age.
“That’s anchoring a lot of jobs. It’s worth about 20,000 jobs across Victoria.
“We had a bunch of meetings around the opportunities for further work in that sector.”
