A pipe bomb has been found during a security alert in Londonderry on Saturday.

Part of Earhart Park was closed following the discovery of a suspicious object in the area. A number of people were moved from their homes.

The alert ended just before 20:00 GMT. The PSNI tweeted “A viable pipe bomb type device has been taken away for examination”.

The Shantallow Community Centre was opened for residents who were moved.

Police thanked the community for their “patience and understanding” while the device was made safe and have appealed for anyone with information to contact detectives at Strand Road station.
