With early government estimates suggesting that around half the houses on Tonga’s main island of Tongatapu have been damaged or destroyed, there are already calls for people to rebuild ‘cyclone resilient’ homes.

The NGO Habitat for Humanity has in recent years worked in countries like Tonga, as well as Samoa and Fiji.

Its New Zealand CEO Claire Szabo says they’ve been helping communities build more resilient homes , and they hope to do so again in Tonga, and also in Samoa, which was hit by Cyclone Gita at the weekend.
