Hi Sam, you are becoming quite the regular in the UK. Did you ever dream you would have success on these shores?
I’m totally honored by the love I feel in the UK.
What do you like most about UK audiences?
It’s hilariously diverse. Each show is split between youngsters and middle aged adults.
How do they differ to those in the States?
I think I’m more popular in the UK than I am in my home country. Is that sad?
You are now two albums into your recording career, what have you learnt from the releases?
There’s a right way and a wrong way to do almost everything. Choose the right way.
What is the best feedback you have received?
One time Bonnie Raitt told me I had a good voice. I think I retired after that.
Last night in Copenhagen someone in the audience yelled “Turn down the bass!” (pronounced like the fish). I told them to fuck off. Haha.
And the most unexpected?
When I was recording the album Angeleno with Ry Cooder he tracked the lead guitar solo in the song “It Might Kill Me” and said it was his personal favorite guitar track he’d ever performed. I was shocked.
Having toured extensively in the UK, how much insight have you had to the British country scene?
Honestly – not much. Can you send me some Cliff Notes?
Are there any acts that you have seen on the UK country scene that would do well Stateside?
I think Yolo Carter is amazing.
Are there any UK artists you would like to collaborate with?
Outside of the UK and US, where have you enjoyed touring most?
Spain, Norway and Sweden.
Is there a venue you haven’t played as yet, that you dream of playing?
I haven’t played most of the great venues in the world, so that list would be too long.
Lastly, what is your one tour essential?
My iPhone – so I can FaceTime with my wife and son.
