newsCO.com.au–SA ministers Snelling, Vlahos quit cabinet

September 17, 2017

South Australia is set to get two new ministers and a new-look state cabinet just six months out from the next state election.

The Labor caucus will meet Monday to confirm a replacement for Health Minister Jack Snelling who has quit the cabinet and will not seek re-election in March.

In a surprise move, Disability and Mental Health Minister Leesa Vlahos has also resigned from the cabinet although she will remain in parliament, The Advertiser reports.

She cited “personal health” reasons, according to the paper, but will stand in the March election.

Ms Vlahos was a central figure in the Oakden aged-care scandal.

Premier Jay Weatherill has not indicated whether or not he will make minimal changes to fill the vacancy or take the opportunity to undertake a wider reshuffle.

“You’ll have to wait and see,” Mr Weatherill said.

“Fortunately, we’ve got a great team of people to choose from. We’ve got a stellar backbench, many of whom are very interested in becoming ministers.

“It’s an opportunity six months out from an election to refresh our team.”

Opposition Leader Steven Marshall has urged the premier to use the reshuffle to get rid of some under-performing ministers.

But he’s also described Mr Snelling’s departure as a vote of no confidence in the government and a slap in the face for Mr Weatherill.
