A veteran police officer has been charged with a range of serious assault offences, including allegedly threatening to kill a man by placing a loaded gun in his mouth.
Detective Sergeant Mick Gaul was charged on summons with four counts of common law assault, four counts of misconduct in public office, three counts of recklessly cause injury and three counts of intentionally causing injury.
Previously based with Hume crime investigation unit, Mr Gaul will face a further three counts of inciting another person to commit an indictable offence, when he is set to appear in court on October 19 for a directions hearing.
Victoria Police’s professional standards command launched their investigation into Mr Gaul last year over the misconduct allegations that date back to 2009.
Mr Gaul was initially suspended with pay in November 2016.
Fairfax Media understands that several former colleagues of Mr Gaul have provided investigators with sworn statements.
Mr Gaul is yet to make an application with the Police Association of Victoria to fund his legal defence.
A champion suburban footballer in the Eastern Suburban League, Mr Gaul moved into a coaching role with the Glen Waverley Hawks and the Ringwood Redbacks, before resigning in 2014 because of his work commitments with the police force.
