RACING NSW chairman Russell Balding has given his unqualified support to chief executive Peter V’landys’ likely appointment to the Australian Rugby League Commission next week.

“I feel Peter is the best sporting administrator in the country and the ARL’s interest is an endorsement of what he has achieved in NSW racing,’’ Balding said. “He is so professional, so committed, his work ethic is extraordinary and he has the runs on the board.

“When it was first rumoured that Peter could be selected for a ARL Commission seat I spoke with him about it and told him he had my full support and the (Racing NSW) board’s full support.’’

V’landys was a unanimous choice of the 16 NRL clubs to represent them on the new-look independent ARL Commission provided constitutional reforms are passed at the annual general meeting on February 23.

ARL Commission chairman-in-waiting Peter Beattie has been working behind the scenes to keep reform on track but there are several NRL clubs yet to decide whether to vote for or against the changes.

Balding can find only upside for Racing NSW with V’landys taking on a dual role with his likely appointment to the ARL Commission, explaining there are a lot of synergies between racing and rugby league with many punters close followers of both sports.

“We can’t be insular about this, if Peter is appointed to the ARL (Commission) all I can see is benefits for racing,’’ Balding said.

“The two sports are closely aligned in many ways and both organisations will be able to use Peter’s experience and abilities.’’

Balding also dismissed any concerns the Racing NSW board may have with V’landys having to split some of his time between two demanding sporting administrative roles.

“I’ve got no issue with Peter wearing two hats,’’ Balding said.

“His primary role remains as Racing NSW chief executive. He has a dynamic management team around him and he is so professional he can do both roles easily. The (Racing NSW) board is right behind him on this.’’

Balding also made comment on the bumper 1454 nominations, including the record 41 overseas entries taken earlier this week for The Championships at Royal Randwick on April 7 and 14, declaring the numbers are a measure of the growing acceptance of Sydney’s autumn carnival.

“We always felt it would take four or five years for The Championships to be fully established on the world’s stage and I think the number of entries from overseas shows that it has now being internationally recognised as a major racing event,’’ Balding said.

“The prizemoney for The Championships and throughout the Sydney autumn carnival is so good we are able to attract the best of the best. We should be proud of the quality of Sydney racing.’’
