Orange is the new blue for Australian Monopoly players with the NSW country town voted as one of Australia’s most prestigious areas along with Sydney Harbour.
In the latest Australian version of Monopoly, Sydney Harbour and Orange occupy the dark blue spots reserved for Mayfair and Park Lane in the original board game.
The two NSW locations were voted top of the prestige property pile by 35,000 Australian Monopoly players who were asked to pick from 40 different areas in a three-week election last November.
They topped areas such as Queensland’s Gold Coast and Whitsundays, South Australia’s Barossa Valley, Victoria’s Great Ocean Road and Western Australia’s Broome to take out the prime positions.
The least desirable location was the Northern Territory, although this may have been affected by a smaller population available to take part in the voting.
Ritika Gray, associate brand manager with Hasbro Australia which is distributing the game, said the strong polling for Orange led to a surprise result.
“The people of Orange backed their town quite heavily,” she said.
“They are clearly very passionate about what they have to offer and they voted very consistently. Their passion is pretty clear from the results.”
The election was a collaboration between the board game and the tourism office for each Australian state and territory which provided a short list of destinations.
NSW Tourism Minister Adam Marshall said he was pleased to see Sydney Harbour and Orange take out the prime positions on the new board game which goes on sale on Thursday.
“We’re delighted our state has trumped the competition which once again reinstates NSW as the number one place to live, work and enjoy,” he said.
Some of Sydney’s less attractive aspects feature in the Community Chest and Chance cards which include penalties for being caught in peak hour traffic and an increase in council rates.
But players have the opportunity to get ahead by selling their State of Origin tickets on an online auction or winning a Melbourne Cup sweep.
There is an Australian flavour to the player tokens which include a meat pie, a barbecue, a cricket bat, a kookaburra and a kangaroo.
The train stations featured on the original board game have been replaced by the airports of Sydney, Perth, Brisbane and Melbourne.
