It was meant to be an early morning conference to introduce the new member for Cottesloe to Perth media… little did Liberal MP David Honey know he was set to be hugely upstaged.
Fresh from his near 60 per cent win in the safe Liberal seat vacated by former Premier Colin Barnett he was due to meet the media at 9am at the Blue Duck.
But reporters across Perth were sidetracked when it emerged none other than Oscar nominee Margot Robbie was having breakfast there.
Having flown in from Sydney for the Australian premiere of her new animated movie Peter Rabbit, the producer and star of I, Tonya had no idea about the double booking that left political journos wondering what was more important.
Among those at the conference was The West Australian’s political editor Gary Adshead.
Speaking to Radio 6PR he said the surprise star spotting, took the shine off MP Honey’s first media event.
“I was there to see David Honey and Dr Mike Nahan, the Opposition Leader, and do an interview with them but gee whiz, things changed,” he told The Weekend with Jane Marwick.
“So, I was having a quick look around and ‘oh my God’ that is Margot Robbie.
“She must have seen the cameras coming out on to the balcony at the Blue Duck thinking ‘damn it the paparazzi know I’m here.’
“But we were just waiting for David Honey and Dr Mike Nahan!
But despite his plan to ditch the conference to get a picture of the Hollywood starlet, it was to no avail.
“Once they realised we had probably gone outside, they then did a bit of a switcheroo and made her disappear.
“I’m sure there was any number of people willing to help her out there, past us.”
It wasn’t the only spotting of the big screen star from Queensland however, it’s thought she flew down south for lunch were she posed with Perth identity Sam Wylie.
