newsCO.com.au–Melbourne CBD intersection closed as police run ‘safety checks’

February 15, 2018

A major CBD intersection has closed and a number of businesses evacuated while the bomb squad investigates after a suspicious package was found.

Victoria Police confirmed officers were conducting “safety checks” at an address on Russell Street in Melbourne’s CBD.

It is believed police are focusing their attention on the QV department store on the corner of Swanston and Lonsdale Streets.

Police would not detail what these checks involved but The Age understands the nearby QV1 Melbourne apartments are in lock-down.

Traffic between Lonsdale and Little Lonsdale streets has been closed with a number of nearby businesses evacuated as a precaution, police said.

Victoria Police spokeswoman Natalie Butler confirmed police were on the scene.
