The name of a man found dead in a wheelie bin in Melbourne’s north has been revealed by police, who have called for public help in their investigation into his suspicious death.

The body was found in Preston on Saturday when a garbage man was emptying the bin just after 8:00am.

Police have now identified the man as 44-year-old Ashley Phillips from Broadmeadows.

They are treating the death as suspicious.

On Monday police released an image of a T-shirt with the logo of a Korean band Mr Phillips was wearing in the hope someone would recognise it.

Investigators believe the bin had come from somewhere else and had been left on Butler Street, near Young Street, in the early hours of Friday morning.

A resident noticed the bin and had called the council to have it removed.

They called on anyone with information, or who saw any suspicious activity in the area, to contact them.
