Former New York State Senate Majority Leader Joe Bruno gave a shout out to Sheldon Silver Thursday after an appellate court overturned the ex-Assembly Speaker’s corruption conviction.
Bruno, convicted of mail fraud in 2009, was subsequently acquitted in 2014 in a retrial after the U.S. Supreme Court scaled back a law defining what constitutes “honest services” fraud by a public official.
“Today’s decision by the US Second Circuit rightfully looked at the law and our constitution and determined that justice was not served,” Bruno said.
“I offer my best wishes to the former Speaker and his family and hope that in his case, a new administration and U.S. Attorney refocuses attention on how these offices function with respect to the rule of law and more importantly our Constitution.”
He added: “It’s unfortunate that any over-zealous prosecutor has unlimited resources and time to bring charges and seek convictions. And as these cases are overturned, it’s time that taxpayers demand that limited public resources be put to better use.”
Bruno served as Senate majority leader from 1994 to 2008.
Following his acquittal, the state reimbursed Bruno $2.4 million of his $4 million in legal bills.
