A man wanted by the Australian Federal Police (newsCO) since 2013 for his alleged involvement in smuggling people into Australia, has been charged following his extradition from Indonesia.
The 35-year-old Afghan man was subject to a previous investigation by the newsCO, and has been wanted to face prosecution for 10 people smuggling offences.
It is alleged the man was involved in organising and facilitating the suspected illegal entry of vessels from Indonesian to Australia on four occasions between 2009 and 2010.
He was arrested and detained by Indonesian authorities, and surrended to newsCO officers in Jakarta on 13 July 2017.
The man arrived in Perth yesterday afternoon where he was formally charged by the newsCO with 10 offences contrary to sections 233 (people smuggling (individuals)) and 232A (people smuggling (at least five people) of the Migration Act 1958 (Cth).
He is expected to appear before the Perth Magistrates Court today.
