New bushfire weapon for wine producers

Jeremy Story Carter

As the threat of bushfires continues to grow around the South West and Great Southern, so too does the risk to our lives, our homes and also, our crops.

One industry that can suffer severe damage from fires is the wine industry, and particualrly the effect of smoke on grapes.

But this year, wine producers will have a new tool to prepare against the threat of smoke damage.

Kristen Brodison from the Department of Agriculture says that producers need all the help they can get to prevent against smoke damage.

She says the new Smoke Taint Risk Calculator can offer crucial information to producers that could save them entire vineyards’ worth of grapes.

The calculator can be accessed online at agric.wa.gov.au/star.

Citrus report released

Clint Jasper

A Senate inquiry into the Australian citrus industry has found a more transparent representative body should be established.

The inquiry was announced in March, to look at the structure of the industry, export issues and supply-chain efficiencies.

A final report was tabled in Parliament yesterday, outlining 12 key recommendations.

South Australian Liberal Senator, Anne Ruston, has been involved in the inquiry – and says there are currently too many citrus growers sitting on the main industry bodies.

The secret to a good field bin tractor revealed

Tara De Landgrafft

There’s thousands of them scattered across the countryside, some new, some old, some homemade.

But what really makes a good field bin tractor?

It’s one of the most essential pieces of machinery for grain growers and yet it seems that a tractor is relegated to be used on field bins only when they are now good for anything else and past their use by date.

Field bins store grain from headers at harvest time and most need a tractor to be towed around from paddock to paddock.

Grain is augured out of the field bin using a power take off shaft (PTO) which is also usually operated by tractor.

Dunn Rock farmer Trevor De Landgrafft says there are a couple of essential things that make a good field bin tractor.

“There’s always got to be a few features about a tractor that make them a good field bin tractor, and hopefully it’s that they are fast and that you can operate the PTO from the outside,” he says.
