Jonni has spent almost two years relentlessly searching for her 23-year-old daughter, Christina Morris, who disappeared in 2014 after a night out with friends, and she admits that the search has taken a significant toll on her marriage and family.
“My obsession to finding my daughter is destroying my marriage,” says Jonni, who has searched for Christina for 10-12 hours a day. “I told [my husband] Ronnie I didn’t care about him, I didn’t care about anybody but Christina … Christina comes before anybody, including my husband and my stepsons, because Christina is the first love that I’ve ever felt in my entire life. I cannot think about anything else until I have closure.”
While Jonni says she’ll never give up until she finds out what happened to Christina, she and Ronnie turn to Dr. Phil seeking help to save their relationship.
In the video above, Dr. Phil tells Jonni she shouldn’t feel guilty about living her life without her daughter.
“This can either be a wedge that’s driven between the two of you and destroys not just one life, but destroys yours, destroys this family. Or, you can choose to come together,” he says to the couple.
He explains that Jonni isn’t betraying her daughter if she is happy and enjoys her life with her husband and stepsons.
“You have to compartmentalize this,” Dr. Phil says. “The depth and breadth of your love for her is not reflected by the depth and breadth of your obsession in looking for her.”
Dr. Phil tells the couple that it is important they come together and lean on each other for support. “Do not let her legacy be your destruction. Don’t let her legacy be pain,” he says.
