newsCO.com.au – Love Island’s Olivia Buckland reveals the show saved her from anxiety and depression after being treated terribly by ex-boyfriends

July 19, 2017

Olivia who is due to marry Alex Bowen after meeting in the villa, says that despite difficult days she deals with her mental health better now and praises other celebs like Holly Hagan for also being open.

She told Reveal: “Before I went on the show, I was really struggling.

“I was living on my own and I didn’t like my job, so I had really bad anxiety and was also struggling with depression.

“Love Island brought me out of my shell. Now everyone’s seen the real me and I’m grateful for that.

“I’ve been through a lot in previous relationships – I’ve been cheated on as well and had bad boyfriends.

“I don’t deal well with that kind of thing, and it makes me really aware of what people think of me.

“I put myself out there because I want other people who have struggled to follow in my footsteps and push themselves too.”

“I still have my bad days.

“I get anxious about going out sometimes or, before an event I’ll get scared to go. I think I will always have it with me, but I’ve learnt to control it.

“Hearing other people in the media talk about it, like Holly Hagan, makes me feel better.”

On the up: Olivia Buckland was left devastated on last year’s Love Island when the lie detector challenge showed less than flattering results for her partner Alex Bowen.

Olivia found love with Alex on last year’s show after he came as a late arrival and she fell for the hunk shortly after brief romances with Terry Walsh and Rykard Jenkins.

While Olivia was horrified by the result last year, in which the couples pen questions for one another and watch the test through a screen, she was keen to point out the results can never know the truth – as illustrated by her lasting romance with Alex.

She took to Twitter to pen: ‘The lie detectors can’t predict the future so that tells you how accurate they are! #loveisland… It’s a lie detector not a crystal ball. But the islanders think it’s 100% so let’s enjoy the ride’.

In last year’s show Olivia joined her fellow female Islanders in penning questions for their companions to answer – after which she was less that pleased with the results.

Olivia was the most apprehensive, as she said: ‘The boys are very nervous and I feel like the girls don’t really want to know the answers. It’s going to be funny, but a bad funny.

‘If the boys answer the wrong way, there’s going to be tantrums. I haven’t gone in hard (with my questions) but I haven’t given him an easy ride. I think Alex needs to squirm a little bit.’

Alex was the last boy to be tested and his nerves were clear to see before he was strapped up and the questioning began. The questions the Wolverhampton native was asked included: are your feelings real towards Olivia?, do you see a future with Olivia? – to which he responded yes.

Way back when: Olivia was the most apprehensive, as she said: ‘The boys are very nervous and I feel like the girls don’t really want to know the answers. It’s going to be funny, but a bad funny.

The next asked: is Olivia silly to trust you? do you find any girl in the villa more attractive than Olivia?

Devastatingly for Olivia, every question came back as a lie leading to the heartbroken scaffolder blasting the test and growing increasingly frustrated at the disappointing result.

He said: ‘The test can go f**k itself really. I don’t care what the test has got to say. I literally couldn’t look at Olivia because I didn’t know what she was thinking.

‘I just wanted to be outside on my own and chill. When everyone started coming over to me, it got me upset. I know how I feel about the girl, and that’s all that matters to me.’

Devastated: Also feeling the pressure from the seeming lies, Olivia headed to the beach hut and said: ‘What am I meant to say to Alex? Where am I going to go from here? I’m so angry. There wasn’t even one thing to reassure me’

Also feeling the pressure from the seeming lies, Olivia headed to the beach hut and said: ‘What am I meant to say to Alex? Where am I going to go from here? I’m so angry. There wasn’t even one thing to reassure me.’

As he struggled to face Olivia, the typically stoic star then started to well up as he rushed out to the garden to compose himself before the boys came to comfort him.

After chatting to the boys, Alex plucked up the courage to speak to Olivia, saying: ‘I don’t wanna see you upset man. All I’m bothered about is me and you. I know how I feel. I’ve come out of there and got teary eyed, it takes a lot for me to be like that.

‘If I didn’t care about you, it wouldn’t get me upset. It’s bull***t. All I was bothered about when the detector was turning red [to indicate a lie], was about you, because I don’t want to see you upset.

A year later, the happy couple are living in bliss, after Alex moved to Olivia’s native Essex, after which they bought a dog before he popped the question in November.

‘You know I care about you. Everyone else in this villa knows my feelings for you. I’ve said it enough. Every word I said at recoupling, I meant every word. I just need you to trust me.’

It seemed his convincing appeal did the trick as Olivia seemed appeased, saying: ‘It’s made me realise I do trust you. I can see your face; I know you’re telling the truth. If people think I’m an idiot for believing you over the lie detector test, then they need their head tested.’
